After dropping my kids off at school two weeks ago I was driving home along the busy state road that has a speed limit of 40 which almost no one adheres to. It was a slow traffic day and another car from my kid’s school (I’ll call them “G family”) was in front of us by about 300 yards. On the inbound side of the road a tractor trailer was pulling into a warehouse, but it didn’t judge it right and so was still nose-out into the roadway.
I saw it from a distance and was trying to assess if it was stuck there or still backing in or if it was waiting for the outbound side to be clear so it could go forward more.
I was prompted with the thought “Stop for the truck”. But I then thought “After the G family goes it’s just me, so he’ll have an opening.” Then up ahead the G family moved from the left lane over to the right lane as they got closer to the truck. I took notice, but I did not stop.
As I myself got closer I was prompted with another thought, “Well, if you’re not going to stop at least get over.” So I moved over to the right lane.
As I passed the truck I could see it was actually blocking both lanes of inbound traffic and must have definitely be waiting for my side to clear too. And then I saw a car which was about 5 cars back in the small traffic line that had started to build up choose zip into the inbound lane rather than stop. My guess is that they didn’t see this stopped traffic (as the truck was just around a bend (from the inbound side) where you can see but it’s hard to fully judge) and they kept going at 40+ miles per hour in the lane I had just been in!
I laid on my horn as I went by watching the car just drive on the wrong side of the road …And then, as I started to get all jittery and worked up, I thanked God and the Holy Spirit and our Guardian Angels for protecting Mabel and me. Because not only was I in the car, but Mabel was in there too and she sits on the driver side in the back.
As I looked in my rearview mirror I saw two more cars coming up the road behind me, and hopefully they were far enough back to react and perhaps stop for the truck. But then I went around the bend in the road and couldn’t see anymore.
In reflecting upon it more I was amazed, not only by the initial prompting of the Holy Spirit (the one I listened to but ignored) but also by the fact the Holy Spirit tried again. “Well, if you’re not going to listen to that could you at least get over to the other lane?”. And fortunately I was smart enough to listen and respond.
I got home and fell to my knees in thanksgiving. I was jittery (and thinking about it again has me getting jittery). I thanked God, the Holy Spirit, my Guardian Angel for keeping us safe.
This isn’t the first time the Holy Spirit has saved me from oncoming cars, years ago I was driving my mom-in-law home after a night watching my dad-in-law and husband play music at the bar. We got off the highway and usually I get over to the right lane in that area because the roadway is tricky and confusing, but the Holy Spirit seemed to shout at me so loud: “Stay here”. So I stayed in the left lane. Moments later not one but two fast sports cars raced off the highway and straight towards me in the lane I would have been in. It happened so fast that I definitely would not have been able to get out of the way or react in time. …The way this roadway is set up is highly confusing (the outbound loops down and under the highway and then you drive towards where the inbound lane exits the highway). but I’m not sure how they made such a mistake. But what I do know is that without listening to and responding to the Holy Spirit my life would have been very different after that moment.
