In Matthew 1 we learn of Jesus’s genealogy and the Holy Spirit coming to Joseph in a dream. I know the temptation is to zone out for list of names and just think “Yes, yes it all ends at Jesus. Let’s get there already.” But I once heard a priest say that the list is important (should be a bit obvi, as it’s in the Bible) and is there to help show the number of generations (which itself has significance) and we need to avoid our temptation to zone out. (How did he know??))
And so I read Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23 out loud and purposefully today. And tried to absorb each name instead of focusing on the end game. It was enjoyable. And it helped that “Ruth” was on the list- that brought an extra smile to my face. 🙂
