Every hair on your head (Luke 12:7)

You can readily marvel at the statement “even the hairs on your head have been counted”. Just look at your head or brush your hair and see how much hair is there. If you’re like me it’s a lot.

Knowing the exact number seems a bit unfathomable since hairs are so numerous. Sure, some smart mathematician could estimate it out but getting to the precise number? Well, that one is God’s business.

But here’s a funny thing… In all my years of hearing this verse I have never thought too too deeply about it. Yes, I’ve been like “Wow. Just look at how much God loves us that He would know such a thing!” — and I kind of leave it as a “Hey you, look at this great example of God’s love.”

But just the other day it hit me more deeply.

I was sitting with Ruthie and she was just being a cute baby. And I noticed how her hair is coming in. Her baby hair went thru a transition of being shed/rubbed off and is now back to growing again – and it must have passed some point of growth which made me to realize “Oh look her hair is coming in.”

And then I paused and this verse (Luke 12:7) crossed my mind. But it did so in a way that it never has before.

I’ve always just thought of it as something “in the moment” – That God knows how many hairs are on my head right now.

I never thought about it beyond “here’s the number on your head right now” until looking at Ruthie. And I realized “Oh wow. It isn’t just the number of hairs on my head today, but also how many were there yesterday and how many will be there tomorrow. …and every day of my life God knows the number of hairs on my head.”

Maybe I just “missed it” and that’s been everyone else’s clear understanding of this verse. But between Ruthie growing new hair and the recent constant shedding of mine, hairs have been on my mind (in my head?) recently and so this verse finally struck me with its “Aha!” moment.

You think you understand the depth of God’s love for you then *WHAM!* He hits you with a deeper understanding and you realize that you have only but scratched the surface of understanding the depths of His love.

…And then you can marvel in the fact that He calls you His son/daughter. He loves you completely – as you are today, how you will be tomorrow. How unworthy are we, and yet His love for us persists! I have not escaped the notice of God.

USCCB Luke 12:6-7: Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins?* Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God. Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.
